"How can people have wings like birds and still not be free?"

Before I write this essay, whoever is reading this, I want to make sure that you know that people don't have wings. But, if they did have wings, this is how they would not be free: If people had wings like birds, even though they could go wherever they wanted, they would not be free because if slaves could fly people would be looking for them, so they could not land. If they landed they might be caught so they would only be able to land for a short while. They also might not be able to find enough food.

If people like us could fly we too might not be able to find enough food.

Anyway, if I had wings and could fly, away, I wouldn't do it! Even though I sometimes wish that I could.

Ellie, I really like what you wrote because you took it in a completely different direction than what I was thinking. I never thought about how sometimes people might have developed flight muscles but are unable to use them due to the circumstances around them.

You're a terrific daughter, Ellie! I'm so very glad you plan to stick around!!

Love,
Mom :)

Hi Ellie,

Your mom told me you have a blog. Great idea! I like your ideas about people not being free even though they have wings. Someone would always be looking for “fly away” slaves and it would be hard to find food and always be on the “fly.” I like to think about having wings in a little different way. When you obey laws or keep commandments you are free. When you keep the Word of Wisdom, for example, you are free from consequences of poor health choices. You don’t have to ever give up smoking if you never start. You can’t be drunk if you don’t drink alcoholic beverages. The laws of the land work the same way: you don’t have to pay fines for speeding, if you don’t speed. You won’t have to spend time in jail if you don’t rob a bank. You’re free (or you have your wings) when you are obedient.

Keep on writing! You are a wonderful granddaughter.
Love, Nanna

A fact about why birds can fly is because they are light animals because they have hollow bones. I man would have to be much stronger than a bird to get his body off the ground. A bird cannot do the kind of work that other animals can do because they are not stromg enough. Father in heaven knows what every animal should do and makes each one special to do what life requires of him. Keep writing Ellie, I like your thoughts which you express very well.
